Custom Profile - CP800_PM5a

This printer profile was created with PM5 ver 5.0.10. using TC283 test patches. The test results are as follows.

Custom Profile - CP720.icc

This printer icc profile was found in the internet and it can be downloaded [ here ].
It was created for CP720 and hence may not work satisfactorily for CP800. When this printer profile was used with CP800, the reproduced colors were very much desaturated.

Custom Profile - Canon CP800_4x6.icc

This icc printer profile for CP800 could be found [ HERE ]. Its color performance was studied by subjecting it to both 24-color and GRACol 1617 tests.

24-color Test

GRACol2006 Test

Testing CP800 Native Driver with GRACoL2006_1617

Testing the CP800 Native Driver
The 1617-patch GRACol test chart was converted to sRGB jpeg file before printing out with Selphy Print utility. This is important as sRGB is the default color space for the Selphy native driver. The reference set that was used for the comparison with the measured data was generated  by extracting the RGB values from the jpeg image.

112 Test Pattern
The 112 test chart was converted to jpeg file in sRGB color space and printed with Selphy Print utility. Printed patches were measured and compared with reference values which were extracted from the jpeg image.

sRGB Color Reproduction - Evaluating with 24-color Checker

Below steps were followed for evaluating the sRGB color reproduction capability for the CP800.
a. The 24-color checker image was converted to sRGB color space, and saved in jpeg format.
b. The RGB reference values were extracted from the jpeg image.
c. The jpeg image was printed out with Canon Selphy Print utility.
d. The color patches of the printout was measured with a spectrometer.
e. The reference and the measured values were compared with PatchTool using ΔE2000.

Comparing Reference values and Measured data
Color Difference was calculated with ΔE2000
What is ΔE Color Difference
CIELab is perceptually uniform color space and the beauty is that it enable us to compute mathematically the distance between 2 colors that represents how close they are in the color space. In general, and subjectively speaking,
1 ΔE: threshold of what is just perceptible to the human eye.
3 ΔE: detectable by color professionals or an trained eye.
6 ΔE: often considered acceptable for printed material.

CP800 & S9045 Dye-Sub Gamut Comparison

CHC-S9045 is a high performance dye-sub printer by Sinfonai Technology, the company was previously known as Shinko Electric Co. Ltd. [ Link ]

Left: shadow                  Center: midtone                 Right: highlight
Note that at midtone and highlight, the CP800 extends into richer cyan and green. Overall,  S9045 has better color reproduction for magenta, orange and yellow.

Color Gamut for CP800

Color Gamut for CP800
Color gamut is the range of colors that can be reproduced by input or output devices. The gamut volume for CP800 is much smaller compared with that for the standard monitor. In the following illustrations, the solid grapher plot represents the gamut volume for CP800 in Lab space, whereas the wired mesh shows the boundary of the gamut for sRGB. Gamut volume for CP800 is 475,000 approximately. In contrast, the calculated gamut volumes with ColorThink Pro  for sRGB and Adobe RGB are 832,478 and 1,207,520, respectively.

Below is the gamut plot for CP800 in xyY space.

Canon Selphy CP800

Overview

The Canon SELPHY CP800 is a dye-sublimation photo printer which is capable of delivering postcard (3.94" x 5.83" border less) size at about 47 sec per print. Its interface options include a card slot capable of supporting over 20 different types of memory cards for standalone printing, and a USB port for direct PC connection. Wireless printing is also made possible with an optional Bluetooth adapter and an optional battery pack for wireless printing on the go. The protective overcoat finishing keeps images from fading, smudge-proof and water-proof.

Selphy Native Driver
The Selphy native driver accepts only jpeg image with default sRGB color space. Embedded icc profile in the image file will be ignored. The printer property setup dialog does not allow for custom icc profile selection. Nevertheless, better color reproduction is still possible by employing custom printer icc profile printing directly through Photoshop CS, Nikon Capture NX2 or similar applications that are capable of managing printer color output.

Welcome to my blog

This blog is about how to achieve better color reproduction with your Canon Selphy CP800 dye-sublimation photo printer.

I analyzed its color reproduction capability with the help of some software and hardware tools.

I have access to color profilers such as PM5, MP and  Argyllcms, and software tools such as PatchTool , Babelcolor CT&A, ColorThink Pro 3 and Gamutvision. As for hardware wise, I use I1pro and DTP41 for color measurement.

A highly accurate scanner profile for V500 was created and it is dedicated for use with CP800 and its media (ink & paper). It can achieve color matching of better than 2.0 ΔE2000 (1.2 typically) when capturing the output from CP800, and without it accurate reviewing of the printed images cannot be easily realized.
